Students are unable to EMAIL or send MESSAGES to the instructor because they don't see the instructor's name as one of the possible email or message recipients.   n/a

This has to do with an individual user setting that instructors can change for their own Blackboard profile. I happened because at some point the instructor must have gone in and selected certain privacy settings--it is NOT a "default" Blackboard setting. Here's how the instructor can fix the problem:

  1. Click on My Places link (top right of Blackboard window)
  2. Click Personal Information.
  3. Click Set Privacy Options.
  4. From the "Set Privacy Options" window, scroll down to the the "Email Options" heading. Below that heading you will  see a list of all your courses.
  5. IF THE CHECKBOX IS SELECTED IN FRONT OF ANY COURSES, DESELECT THE CHECKBOX--this is what is preventing your students from emailing you.

Once you do that, your name will appear in the list of class users whom your students may email.  NOTE:  These boxes are NOT checked by default; it's something that each user chooses to select or deselect.

Messages forwarded do not include original "From"

Note from Bb: (Case 889185)

"The forwarding of mail not including original from address appears to be a security limitation to hide the original sender's name/username. There isn't a way to turn this on in the system. I would suggest submitting an enhancement request to add this feature to a new release."

I am unable to attach a file to a Message when I am either Replying to or Forwarding a message

This is a known issue in Bb Learn:  When either students or faculty Reply or Forward a message, there is no “Add Attachment” option.

This has been reported but we do not yet have a date for when this issue will be fixed.

This is not considered a bug.  Please submit an Enhancement Request for this to become a feature they consider adding. This is what Bb reported:

"In my research, I did find existing Enhancement Requests for the inability to add attachments when using the Reply or Forward option for a Message. I did not find an existing Enhancement Request however to allow more than one file attachment to a Message. In both instances, I would advise placing an Enhancement Request to raise the visibility of these functionalities to have them considered in a future release of Blackboard."

Are Messages we send to students linked to Bb Learn Notifications?
In the Mail tool in Bb Vista, if there were new messages, there was an indicator that let both faculty and students know.
CURRENTLY in Bb Learn, the Messages tool is not linked up to the "Notifications" system at all. HOWEVER, during the "Bb Learn suggestion squad" survey held last spring the issue of having both students and faculty notified of new Messages was ranked high on the "fix list" (#7) so we feel quite confident that Bb will fix this issue be prior to our system-wide rollout in Fall '12. It may be that this would mean that new messages to each user would show up in the "What's New" module (or in some other, new module), and presumably faculty would also have the option of sending notifications to students who have violated an Early Warning System rule using both Messages AND the Email tool (currently, notifications are only sent via the Email tool).

HTM attachments in Messages come up with a "This file could not be written to cache" error when trying to right-click to download.

Bb Investigating. Case 891769.   .PDF and other file types tested do not come up with this error and are able to be downloaded with a right-click.

Workaround is to left-click to open, and then Save As to .htm.
