Students are unable to EMAIL or send MESSAGES to the instructor because they don't see the instructor's name as one of the possible email or message recipients.   n/a

This has to do with an individual user setting that instructors can change for their own Blackboard profile. I happened because at some point the instructor must have gone in and selected certain privacy settings--it is NOT a "default" Blackboard setting. Here's how the instructor can fix the problem:

  1. Click on My Places link (top right of Blackboard window)
  2. Click Personal Information.
  3. Click Set Privacy Options.
  4. From the "Set Privacy Options" window, scroll down to the the "Email Options" heading. Below that heading you will  see a list of all your courses.
  5. IF THE CHECKBOX IS SELECTED IN FRONT OF ANY COURSES, DESELECT THE CHECKBOX--this is what is preventing your students from emailing you.

Once you do that, your name will appear in the list of class users whom your students may email.  NOTE:  These boxes are NOT checked by default; it's something that each user chooses to select or deselect.

When emailing 'all student users' from one course, the instructor sees all the names of the students in the 'To' field of the email.

However, in another course, the same instructor doing the same thing on the same computer sees 'all student users' in the 'To' field rather than individual student names.
It depends on the class size.  When sending an email to all students, if the number of students in a class is below a certain number (I forget how many--15?) then all the students' names will be shown, but if the class is larger than that it will simply say "All student users".

Can I email my students without enabling THEM to have access to the Email tool? n/a n/a YES. Go to the Control Panel>Course Tools>Send Email. From there
Attachments sent from Bb Learn Email and opened in OWA default to a zip when saved to PC Some users have reported that when they tried to open/save a Word file attached to an email forwarded from Bb Learn using Outlook Web Access, the file was saved as a zip rather than as a docx.   This does NOT occur all the time, and does not seemed tied to any particular browser--it may only occur if a browser has particular settings. THE SOLUTION is that when right-clicking on the attachment to save to your own PC, do NOT save it using the .zip suffix that Outlook attaches--simply name the file with a .doc or .docx suffix when you save it and it will save the doc properly to your PC as a Word file. Bouncebacks for erroneous email addresses?
Since Bb Learn's email tool automatically sends a copy of all messages send to students to the email address the instructor has indicated in his/her profile, will the instructor get a "bounceback" message if a student's email is bad?
Not applicable to Bb Vista
Yes. If the email address that Bb Learn has for a student doesn't work, the instructor will get a bounceback message in the Inbox of whatever "external" Internet email address the instructor has designated in his/her Bb Learn profile.

Can students see each other's email addresses in Bb Learn?
Since Bb Learn's email tool works directly with the instructor's and students' own Internet email accounts, can students see each other's actual email addresses in Bb Learn?
Not applicable to Bb Vista
Students can't see others' email addresses from within Bb Learn. HOWEVER, if they send an email message to another student in the class and that student responds, then the respondent's email address does display in the response message.
